Dan Macy is the founder and sole proprietor of Macy Editorial LLC. Dan has 16 years of experience reporting on regulatory affairs in the nation’s capital. Currently he serves as a senior associate in the Office of the Public Editor at Public Broadcasting Services. When not working at PBS, Dan is a freelance reporter and editor. 

Dan’s work has been published by Bloomberg, Bankrate, and Thompson Information Services. Specialties include financial services, energy policy and taxation. Dan has covered beats at the U.S. Treasury Department, Environmental Protection Agency, International Monetary Fund, IRS, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and Congress. He covered the financial crisis of 2008 and the Dodd-Frank reform law for Thompson Publishing Group for 9 years. He most recently spent a year covering the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard for a price reporting agency as a Markets Editor at IHS Markit. 

As a freelance journalist, Dan also has engaged in writing, reporting and editing outside the financial services area. Recent assignments include: 

  • Commenting on live radio from Washington on gun shootings in the United States, for the Evening Extra radio show on BBC Radio Ulster;
  • producing radio interviews on China’s Belt and Road Initiative for China Radio International;
  • producing radio interviews on World Bank “Doing Business” report for China Radio International;
  • photographing  the 2009 Presidential Inauguration for a photo feature in Northern Virginia Magazine; and
  • editing a fiction manuscript for a client.

Dan was the editor of the Employer’s Guide to Fringe Benefits, an online and print information service covering Section 132 of the Tax Code for Thompson Publishing Group in Washington, D.C. He also served as editor of the Money Manager’s Compliance Guide, an information service for the securities industry. While at Thompson, Dan also worked on the development of the Guide to Private Equity Regulatory Compliance. 

Dan obtained a B.A. in Journalism in 1993, from the University of Arizona in Tucson, his home town, where he wrote for various local newspapers. He has lived in Washington, D.C. since 1997.

Dan is an active member of the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., and participates in the club’s freelance and photographer groups.

Dan travels frequently with his camera to cities around the United States and abroad. He has licensed many photos for commercial use. Dan’s still photography has shown up in an episode of FrontLine on PBS; a film documentary about architect Vincent Scully, Jr.; the website of Crain’s Investment News; and in the print edition of Northern Virginia Magazine.
